... when our judgments are highly convenient and gratifying, this is likely a sign that they are the product not of conscience but of wishful thinking

Very good First Things article by Cardinal Pell on 'The Inconvenient Conscience.' (Even if he does use 'likely' when he means 'probably'... but I believe that's valid in colonial English?!)

My inconvenient conscience is now telling me to get back to work...
